Blending essential oils for beginners: how to create a starter kit

Blending Essential Oils for Beginners

Blending essential oils has so many different purposes – to fragrance a room, to remedy ailments, to lift one’s mood… – but it can be daunting to have to figure out where to start, what the best essential oils for beginners are, how to blend essential oils together, what carrier oils to use and so on.

Like any new skill, it can feel overwhelming when you’re just starting out, so it’s important to start simple and get the basics right.

Here at Absolute Aromas, we specialise in essential oils and blends for professional therapists and for those who are dipping their toes into aromatherapy. Our products are of the highest quality and we believe that everyone’s life becomes a bit more enchanted when using essential oils on a regular basis.

So, let us break down how to build your first essential oil starter kit on a budget so that you too can start blending with confidence.

How to create an essential oil starter kit

There are 5 different items we suggest you get when you are new to essential oils:

  1. A couple of carrier oils
  2. A selection of key essential oils that can be mixed
  3. A couple of pre-mixed essential oil blends
  4. A diffuser or oil burner to create beautiful room fragrances
  5. A sturdy box to keep your essential oils in one place

Let’s look at each of the items mentioned above in more depth.

Starter Kit Essential: A couple of carrier oils

Carrier oils – or base oils – are the oils you add your chosen essential oils to. A carrier oil ‘carries’ the essential oil to the skin, hence the name. Using a carrier oil also makes sure that the essential oils are diluted before application to the skin, which is recommended to avoid skin irritation as essential oils are highly concentrated and very potent in their pure form.

There are many carrier oils to choose from and here on our website, we sell no less than 29 different carrier oils, from popular Sweet Almond Oil to rich Avocado Oil. So, which ones are the best ones to add to your starter kit?

Keeping in mind price point and versatility, we recommend Jojoba Oil and Sweet Almond Oil. Both these oils are suitable for all skin types, including baby skin, and are not too expensive.

Jojoba oil is high in vitamin E and naturally rich in antioxidants and fatty acids, making this a wonderfully nourishing oil. This oil naturally resembles the skin’s sebum and therefore absorbs well into skin. Also great for balancing oily and combination skin.

Sweet Almond Oil is one of the most popular carrier oils for massage and for creating massage blends as it provides a ‘medium slip’, which refers to the how easily the hands slide over the skin when using this oil. It can be used on face, body, hair and nails.

Starter Kit Essential: A selection of key essential oils that can be mixed

There are so many essential oils to choose from and each of these will have their own unique properties on body and mind. We have selected 8 different essential oils based on their versatility, as these are often used in blends or on their own.

Each of these simple essential oils can be used for creating massage oils, bath oils, skin oils, room fragrances,…

Starter Kit Essential: A couple of pre-mixed essential oil blends

Create a blend with your individual essential oils, or… take a short cut and use a pre-blended essential oil!

It can be handy to have at least a couple of pre-mixed essential oil blends in your starter kit, which contain a more complex list of ingredients. It’s a cheaper way of getting a complex blend, without having to purchase the whole list of essential oils to achieve the same blend.

We offer 14 different pre-blended essential oils including:

Starter Kit Essential: A diffuser or oil burner to create beautiful room fragrances

A diffuser or oil burner is a way of transforming your simple pure essential oil into a beautiful room fragrance.
You can find out more about how an ultrasonic diffuser works in our recent blog post here.

We offer a range of diffusers, which all will keep the integrity and aromatherapeutic properties of the essential oils intact.

An oil burner simply uses a candle to warm the water with the essential oil and help the fragrance particles to be dispersed in the air.

Creating your own bespoke room fragrance is such a satisfying and easy way to enjoy the benefits and properties of essential oils.

Starter Kit Essential: A sturdy box to keep your essential oils in one place

Having all your essential oils in once place is a great way of staying organised, and it even can help you feel inspired when mixing essential oils.

Our wooden box holds 12 essential oils that will keep them in a safe environment, ready to be used for your next aromatherapy project!

If you travel a lot, then our carry case for essential oils may be a better fit, which holds up to 31 essential oil bottles, 1 carrier oil and small mixing beaker.
