We often think about what we put on our skin or into our bodies, but how often do we consider what we breathe in? Our sense of smell is a direct line to our emotions and wellbeing. A familiar scent can instantly lower our shoulders after a long day or turn a house into a home.  However, as we become more conscious of our indoor environments, it’s time to look closer at the flickering flames and aromatic mists we enjoy. Â
At Absolute Aromas, we believe that scenting your sanctuary should never come at the cost of your health.  Many conventional candles are crafted from paraffin wax, a by-product of petroleum, and when burned, these can release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) like benzene and formaldehyde into your living space, as do many aerosol Air Fresheners or plug-in alternatives.  While air fresheners are great at making a room smell like ‘clean linen’ or ‘pear and freesia’ they don’t actually clean the air; they mostly just add a layer of chemicals to it and could also contain phthalates – chemicals which make the scent last longer, but are also endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with our natural balance of hormones.Â
Choosing the “Clean” GlowÂ
The good news? You don’t have to sacrifice your evening ritual. Transitioning to a non-toxic home is as simple as making more intentional choices:Â
Natural Wax Alternatives: Look for candles made from renewable sources like beeswax or soy wax. Beeswax is the gold standard for purity, while soy wax offers a long, clean burn that carries essential oil scents beautifully.Â
Pure Essential Oils: Many mass-market air fresheners rely on synthetic “fragrance” (a term that can hide hundreds of unlisted chemicals). Choosing products scented with 100% pure essential oils ensures you are inhaling the true essence of the plant, not a laboratory mimic.  As we lab-test all of our essential oils before we blend and bottle them, we can offer complete reassurance that our oils are pure and not diluted or mixed with synthetic nasties.Â
It’s important to note that a well-ventilated home is also one of the best ways to keep your home fresh and clear of nasty odours. Opening a window for just ten minutes a day can drastically improve indoor air quality.Â

Beyond the Flame: Purifying Your SpaceÂ
If you’re looking for alternatives to candles, there are many ways you can add subtle scent to your surroundings without a flame…Â
1. Ultrasonic Diffusers: These use water and vibration to disperse a fine mist of essential oils, hydrating the air while providing therapeutic benefits. These can be used with both pure essential oils or a creation of your own by adding a few drops of multiple scents to the water.Â
2. Room Sprays: our Room Sprays are 100% natural and can double as pillow mists too.  Blends like Prevention, Breatheasy and Lemon all contain naturally antibacterial essential oils to help naturally cleanse your space too.Â
3. Nature’s Air Purifiers: Incorporate houseplants like Snake Plants or Peace Lilies, which are famous for their ability to filter toxins from the air.Â
DIY Home FragranceÂ
There are some great ways to scent your home very simply, without any products at all, but just by using ingredients you may have in your store cupboard at home.  The ‘stovetop simmer’ is arguably the most effective way to scent a whole house quickly. It’s essentially a natural humidifier that releases gentle, botanical aromas.Â
- How to do it: Fill a small pot with water and add aromatic ingredients. Bring to a boil, then turn the heat down to the lowest setting to simmer.Â
- The “Cosy” Scent: Sliced oranges, a few sticks of cinnamon, and a splash of vanilla extract.Â
- The “Fresh” Scent: Sliced lemons, fresh rosemary sprigs, and a teaspoon of peppercorns.Â
- Note: Keep an eye on the water level and add more as it evaporates so the pot doesn’t burn!Â

Eucalyptus Shower Bundles:  If you want your bathroom (and the hallway connected to it) to smell like a high-end resort, this is the easiest “set it and forget it” trick.  Just buy a bunch of fresh eucalyptus from a florist or grocery store. Lightly roll over the leaves with a rolling pin or a wine bottle to release the oils, then tie the stems together with twine.Â
- The Trick: Hang the bundle from your shower head, but behind the stream of water (you want the steam to hit it, not the direct water pressure).Â
- The Result: Every time someone takes a hot shower, the steam carries the scent throughout the house. It lasts for about 3–4 weeks.Â
Pro-Tip: If you have a specific “mystery smell” you’re trying to get rid of, try placing a bowl of white vinegar in the room overnight. It’s an incredible odour neutralizer that leaves no scent behind once it dries!Â
